Well folks,
its time for yet another muscle dvd review by yours truly 1400total!
This
dvd titled “Johnnie O Jackson, all American workout taking
it to the next level” is in fact Johnnie’s second workout
dvd; filmed leading up to the 2004 GNC show of strength.
One thing
I’ve noticed about training dvd’s from all the pros,
is that the closer to the show, and I mean very close like 2 weeks
or less, the less we see of the heavy weights and intensity. This
seems to hold true for this dvd.
The DVD starts
out with his chest and bi workout. Standard training lifts here,
such as bench presses (going up to 405 for 4-5 reps) heavy incline
dumbbell press (120-140), and other machines (seated bench press,
hammer ect). The bicep workout is basic as well. Standing curls,
preacher curls then dumbbell hammers and concentration curls.
His second
workout is legs. Leg extensions followed by squats, followed by
leg presses, sissy squats and leg curls.
His shoulder
and triceps are up next. Military press, followed by machine press,
followed by lateral raises with his back against a pole. Rear
delts are worked with cables and a pec deck machine. Triceps are
skull crushers with a straight bar, kickbacks, and cable work.
The back
workout is the final workout. Chins, dumbbell rows, t-bar rows,
pulldowns, machine rows, followed by hyperextensions.
Let me say
that Johnnie works out intensely. Fast pace movements but only
with about 50% range of motion. But it’s the hardest 50%
part of the rep. Johnnie doesn’t lock out, but he doesn’t
go all the way down either. An example would be bench presses.
He doesn’t touch his chest with the bar, but he doesn’t
lock out either. This type of fast pace training provides constant
stress to the muscle (continuous tension). His form his very similar
to that of Ronnie’s, loose with a lot of momentum.
Some highlights to his training are: 225lbs up right rows! 405
bench presses, his shoulder workout in general!
There is
a segment of him practicing his mandatory poses in the gym. His
conditioning is very good and he is ripped, not super dry, but
very ripped. You know the type of conditioning that you see when
the muscle is pumped, but fades somewhat when relaxed.
On another
note about Johnnie, is that he has an awesome physique. Great round
delts (which are not too big that they detract), a huge thick
round chest, a back that has the elusive combination of thickness
and width, with awesome definition, and arms round and very detailed.
His legs show good conditioning and decent size but do fall short
of his upper body (which based on the way he trains is more genetic
then anything).
Also his
dvd is filled with his voice over’s of instructions and
why he does what he does.
I liked this
dvd, but it was missing a few things.
Where were the heavy deadlifts!!!!!!!!!!!!
Johnnie has been known for those outrageous poundages, but they
are missing from this dvd. Actually he didn’t even perform
deads! Now I’m sure that’s because he was 2 weeks
out, but that is what he is known for. His squats only went up
to 405 as well.
So although
he looks like Ronnie junior, he needs to consider making another
dvd when he is a little further out from a show in which he is
much stronger, to show off that prowess in the gym. Johnnie is
an impressive guy in a sport filled with impressive physiques,
he needs to showcase what makes him special, if he wants a special
DVD.
All in all
a decent dvd, if you’re a fan of Johnnie you’ll like
it. If you get it expecting to see insane poundages, you’ll
be disappointed.
My review:
3 ½ dumbbells out of 5.
